What Next for Paramedic Progression?
Following the changes in HCPC standards of Education and Training, you will be aware the requirement for paramedic registration will change for students entering a programme leading to register from August 2021. To that end, there are no further distance learning programmes planned with the University of West of England. There is no impact to existing registrants.
The Trust has been working hard over the last 12 months to secure a suitable replacement programme and we are happy to confirm the introduction of the paramedic degree apprenticeship into the Trust, in partnership with the University of Cumbria which is anticipated to commence in February 2021.
This programme will utilise the Trusts apprenticeship levy and will therefore cover the tuition fees of the programme.
– A minimum of two years experience as an ECA, Ambulance Practitioner or Technician as at 05 October 2020
– GCSE Grade A-C in Maths and English, or the equivalent Functional Skills certificate, achieved within the last five years. You will need to be able to evidence this by 25 January 2021.
– Hold an Emergency Response Driving qualification
– A minimum contracted hours of 30 hours per week
Anticipated Selection process:
– A values-based application form
– Line manager reference
– Interview and selection process (currently being developed)
The full programme would ordinarily take three years. However, the Trust has worked hard to recognise the value of your knowledge, skills and experience and has an agreed process to accredit prior learning. This will be in the form of a bridging course to enable SWAST staff to step onto the Apprenticeship programme at the beginning of year two.
The bridging course is likely to require a small number of contact days before gaining portfolio evidence to demonstrate a number of learning outcomes. The ECA course content will also be taken into consideration.
The Apprenticeship programme will be delivered in conjunction with the University of Cumbria at SWAST locations. The degree programme will take two years, with a combination of distance learning, classroom sessions, placement days and practical sessions.
As a formal Apprenticeship, the Apprenticeship programme will be fully funded through the Apprenticeship Levy.
However, as a pre-requisite for the Apprenticeship, the bridging course cannot be funded via the levy. This will be self-funded at the cost of £1500.
We anticipate the first cohort commencing the Apprenticeship programme in February 2021, with the bridging course expected to commence in the summer of 2020.
We anticipate recruitment to take place during late spring/early summer of 2020.
Students already progressing on study programmes at the point of September 2021 (when HCPC change their registration criteria) will retain grandfather rights to registration, so students on DLP programmes will be eligible for registration on completion of their studies.
